The George Goodall Award℠

DESCRIPTION OF THE AWARD

George Goodall (1910-2008) is an inspiration to the Legends of Baseball. Not only did he play baseball as a young man, but he continued to play the game well into his senior years, demonstrating a life-long love and enthusiasm for the game. He epitomizes the Legends' "Men of Good Cheer"℠ philosophy by having displayed a long-term respect for the game, his teammates, his opponents and the umpires. He is a positive role model for those of us who feel that baseball isn't only a young man's game.

In 2004, the George Goodall Lifetime Achievement Award ("Award") was established to be presented annually to Legends Players in accordance with the procedures and criteria described below.

NOMINATION PROCEDURE

Only persons who have participated at least 5 Legends tournaments as a player or coach may submit a Nomination Form.

The Nomination Form must be completed and submitted to the Commissioner of Legends of Baseball ("Commissioner") by May 31, or at least a month before any tournament in which the candidate is expected to participate.

NOMINATION CRITERIA

Candidate must have participated in Legends tournaments as a player or coach for at least 3 years.

Subjective Criteria

Candidate must have demonstrated a love and enthusiasm for the game through his actions on and off the field. A candidate may have demonstrated this through attendance at Legends and other baseball events, or may have participated in other initiatives to improve the game or our image in the town of Cooperstown (e.g., may have contributed to the initiatives to improve Doubleday Field).

Candidate must have demonstrated that he is a "man of good cheer" through respect for the game, his teammates, his opponents, and the umpires.

Candidate must have demonstrated a knowledge and understanding of the game either through proficiency or baseball "savvy".

Candidate must have demonstrated an ability/willingness to give it his all (considering of course that age is a handicap for older players).

Goodall Nomination Form: Download the Nomination Form and mail it to Thom Lach at Legends of Baseball.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

The Commissioner will check that the objective criteria have been satisfied (e.g., age and number of years attending Legends tournaments) and forward the Nomination Forms that satisfy the objective criteria to the George Goodall Awards Committee ("Committee") within two weeks. The Committee is comprised of seven former recipients of the Award.

The Committee will vote on the subjective criteria and give the Commissioner the list of the Award recipients prior to the start of the Legends tournament.

This includes "Women of Good Cheer" as well. The above reflects that fact that most Legends are men, but they are men who appreciate and respect women who have played in Legends tournaments.
